Hello all! As this is my first official post, I thought I’d kick off my first series on here! Ahh! *Squeals with excitement and joy* Alright, alright, enough of that, let’s get down to business.
Basically, this series is designed so that one can learn the basics of makeup. Don’t let the flawless faces of the Victoria’s Secret Angels or Kim Kardashian fool you, makeup is hard. It’s hard to buy, apply and everything in between. But, with these helpful little tips and tricks, I can hopefully take some of the strain away. 😉
The first BB is focused on the eyes. They are not called the windows to the soul for no reason, as they are, in my opinion, the most important part of the face and are often the feature that I focus on when I do others makeup. It is important to keep them clean, wide and bright-looking, while maintaining that whole effortless look to them. So, without further ado, here are some tips to brighten your eyes so that you stop people in the streets (in a good way)!
1: HighLIGHT – Whether you are wearing eye makeup or not, one of the most important stages in doing your makeup is to highlight with light colours. It doesn’t matter what skin tone you are, everything from the lightest and brightest white to a medium toned peach, tracing these colours in the inner corner of the eye and just under the brow bone will majorly change your look. Not only will it give you a natural and healthy look, it will widen and brighten your eyes like no other step can. There are many different formulas that professionals use to do this is a sly and sneaky way, but some of the most popular are cream and powder. I prefer creamy products to do this, because they are easier to blend out if you use too much and not as “cakey”, but a good, inexpensive yet pretty powder eye shadow is a very handy tool in a girl’s makeup bag. Honestly, I am aware that a lot of people think the more shimmery their eye highlight is, the better, but I, personally, don’t necessarily believe that. I find that shimmery shades are gorgeous — for a specific look or for an editorial piece in a magazine. If you want a more everyday look, I would recommend sticking to light, matte colours (or, at the very most satin eyeshadows, which are matte with a subtle shimmer/glow) and you will look breathtaking, and so will your eyes. Frankly, I know that not everyone is a fan of eye makeup, but trust me, it will take you less than 2 minutes to do this simple step and you’ll probably be getting compliments all day long.
My picks for eye highlighters: NYX Jumbo Eye Shadow Pencil in Milk, Revlon Illuminance Cream Eye Shadow Quad in Not Just Nudes (#710).
2: Curl Power – 1 of my most important tips to makeup beginners is to curl your lashes! Curl, curl, curl! You have NO idea what kind of difference it will make. You will instantly look wide awake, even if you were up until 4 cramming for that history final. And one major advantage to wider eyes, is that they look brighter, which translates into healthier eyes, which almost always translates into beautiful eyes. If you do not believe me, do what I did when I wanted to test this theory! I knew that I saw all of the same people every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at school. So, I purposely left my lashes uncurled on the Monday and Wednesday, and just applied concealer and lip balm. On the Friday, I applied the exact same things, just a touch of concealer and lip balm and curled my lashes – without anything extra. I could not tell you how many times I got “Oh, did you do something different today?” and “You look nice!” on that day, and literally every day since then (barring if I am sick or in the hospital), I have curled my lashes. A lot of people are under the impression that you need to use an expensive eye lash curler, but honestly, any kind, any price works. I’ve tried just about all of them, and at the end of the day, if it curls your lashes and YOU see a difference, it’s the right one for you.
