Throughout the month of October, I embarked on a bit of a colour journey, experimenting with colours, their concepts and tonal themes. Today, I’m sharing exactly how things unfolded…

In the interest of full disclosure, I did not plan on writing an article about this cake at all. However, sometimes, a girl can no longer justify sitting in her bedroom listening to the Gilmore Guys podcast while doing nothing else. Sometimes, a girl gets a sudden urge to bake something fun, festive and tasty, and sometimes, said baked good ends up looking so pretty, it would be a crime for her not to share it with the world. Enter the maple pecan chocolate cake. Read on and enjoy, friends…
I’m not a cook, in any sense of the word. I definitely enjoy being in the kitchen, experimenting with various ingredients and flavours, seeing what happens when I add a bit of this or when I sautée my broccoli instead of roasting it, etc., however, I’m not a cook. Barring a cooking class I took when I was
a young warthog about 9 as part of the Girl Guides, I’ve not had any formal training in the kitchen (and, let’s be honest…that was maybe 2 hours of a professional chef trying to wrangle some very energetic children, and… I only did it for the badge). I’m not a baker, nor am I a candle-stick maker, but all of that being said, I think some of my happiest moments have been, are and will be spent in a kitchen.
Something about having the freedom to make, well, whatever you want to make, whether it be a quick bag of popcorn or a three-course meal, not having (many) limits and having the space and ability to let your creative juices flow really appeals to me. Thus, a few days ago, I stepped into the kitchen to conquer a strange yearning I had to make and subsequently eat some chocolate cake (fun facts about me: one, I’m not a big chocolate fan and two, as shameful as this may seem, before Sunday, I’d never made chocolate cake from scratch before). I didn’t know if the cake would rise or sink (HA! No pun intended!), but dangnabit, I was going to have fun in the process. Spoiler alert, it didn’t fail at all; in fact, I’ll be damned if it’s not one of my greatest achievements in the kitchen…
It’s been a full month since I last hit the publish button on the ol’ bylaws, and I think it’s time for a comeback. You know, a resurgence, ressurection, renewal; a return, if you will. Yes, life is busy and hectic and crazy and mad, but isn’t that what makes it so awesome!? We would all be very boring people if we didn’t have plenty of things to occupy our days, and hey, they all make for lovely stories down the line. Yes, it’s true, you may think that doing mundane things like walking your dog or going to the grocery store are boring, simple things but have you ever considered this? What you do in your day may seem totally foreign to someone else, and vice versa, and that’s the fun part! To me, the chats I have with the security guard in my office every morning around 6 am seem totally normal, but to someone whom I’ve never met before, that may seem totally strange. Then, there’s also the simple truth of, sometimes your normal, almost mechanical routine could simply, not be. Your commute into work or school could take three times as long because of traffic. Or, say, you could bump into a childhood friend at the dry cleaners. Sure, it might be random, it might be odd, hey, it might even just be plain inconvenient, but at least it’s something different, something that you’ll probably share with friends and family and could even turn into an anecdote. My point is, life throws the unexpected at us everyday, and, speaking for myself, the busier we are, the more caught up in the “busyness” we get, but sometimes, it’s nice to be busy. Social interaction is something that is so important for us here on Earth, and so much of that interaction is us sharing stories from our day, and just think about it, we wouldn’t have any stories to tell if we weren’t busy at all, would we? 😉
With that being said, today I’m going to share a few photos, a few stories and a few things that have just made me happy in all of my busyness since I last wrote an article. I honestly, truly deem each and every one of my readers as one of my friends, and dude, it’s been a while, so this is going to be like one great, (hopefully not too) big catch-up. So, pull up a seat, grab a libation of your choice (I’m sippin’ on some iced coffee as I write this and it is delicioso!), and get comfy. Here we go! 🙂
Hi friends, how’s it going!? As I haven’t been around in a while, happy June! Can you believe we’re already SIX, almost seven months into 2015!? I can’t! I hope the month is treating you well so far and here’s to the final third of it being completely AWESOME! 😀
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending a Pink Garden party organized by one of my favourite bloggers, Amanda of Pink The Town. It was quite the event, with tons of pink and other feminine details around every corner (hello, I was in my element!) and plenty of fun activities to keep everyone attending occupied for hours on end. Today, I’m going to show you how much fun you missed out on and if you’re in the Toronto area, why you should attend Amanda’s next event! 😉
Hey gang, long time no chat! Happy May (and happy Monday)!
I’ve been staying away from the internet for the first little chunk of May, because a) there’s a fair amount going on behind the scenes already for #BeautyBylaws, very, very exciting things (it’s the summer of change, folks…get ready! :D), b) I needed a little longer away from, well, everything to recharge my batteries and get some inspiration and c) hey, let’s face it, Siobhan sucks at time management. And enjoys writing in the third person. 😉
In all seriousness, I am back and ready to embark on the madness that will be Summer 2015. There will be some great things that y’all can look forward to this summer and I can’t wait to share what I’ve been working on! 🙂 I don’t think I’ll be taking another break for a while, though, because, as it happens, my list of posts to write has grown exponentially over the last week; inspiration everywhere! Can’t wait to get crackin’! 😀
In other news, I was supposed to upload this April Favourites video last week, but all didn’t go as planned (are you seeing the lack of time management now? Yea, it’s the common theme in my life…really need to improve my skills in that…if only I had the time… 😉 :P), so I’m uploading it now! In this video, I share all of the beauty products and lifestyle faves from the last month as well as…do a really bad Matthew McConaughey impression?! Ahh, yes, the usual YouTube video awkwardness ensues…welcome back, friend, welcome back (please don’t leave now that you see what you’ve been “missing!”) 😉 😀 Check it out below for a (probable) laugh (at my expense, I totally get it, I laughed at myself, too)!
There you have it, my April favourites! So, tell me, did you enjoy? Did I at least get a smile out of you? I hope so! What were you loving throughout April? What are you enjoying using now? Any TV shows that are simply so good, I have to watch!? Let me know down below!
Here’s to a fabulous week for us all! 🙂
Lots of love,
Bom dia friends! I’m back home from my lovely week in Lisbon and of course, that means a week full of Lisbon and/or travel posts here on the bylaws (don’t worry, if those don’t suit your fancy, I’ll have other posts up throughout the week, as well! :D)! We had a marvellous time (despite me being very ill in the beginning) and I can honestly say that Lisbon is such a beautiful city, filled with super friendly people and gorgeous sights (not to mention that weather, though!). Can’t wait until I can return!
I'm Siobhan and I am the founder & editor of Beauty Bylaws. I love to write, photograph life's special moments & hang out with my family and my adorable calico cat, Lucky. Welcome to my online space, I hope you stay awhile! :) xx
Whoa! Pump the brakes, there, girl! We're currently hard at work on creating an out-of-this-world shop for you to browse, but you'll have to hold on just a little bit longer....BUT, soon, my young padawan, soon! <3
