Apologies for the super cheese name, hehe.
Hi lovelies! I bet you thought I fell off the face of the planet, didn’t you!? No, no, your girl Sio is still here, I’ve just not been feeling well all week. 🙁 I’ve been stuck in bed for most of the week, with the odd excursion to grocery shop or you know, edumacate my little ol’ brain. I’m feeling much better now, though, so I’m back with this pretty darn cool recipe. Before I begin, though, I was wondering…I know it’s super late now, but do you want to read my thoughts on the 87th Annual Oscars on Sunday? I do have a fair amount of opinions (quelle surprise), as well as some unexpected best and worst dressed starlets, but I know that when it comes to these things, the sooner you write about it, the better. So, if you want me to write a quick little post on the Oscars, I will, you just need to tell me by commenting down below (or get at me via my other failsafe communication vessel, Twitter)! 🙂
Okay, okay, so now getting to what you actually wanted to read about, my new favourite smoothie recipe! I’ve been trying to eat a little bit better since the beginning of the year, and by that I mean, incorporate as many good things (read: fruits and veg galore) as possible into my diet and I have to say, it’s not been too bad this time around! It’s been a slow and steady journey and I’ve actually enjoyed it as opposed to other times I’ve tried to eat better when I go “hardcore” and stop by the end of the week. I do cheat every now and then, because MAN! Starbucks lattes are so ding dang delicious, but I don’t feel as guilty when I’m eating well the majority of the time. Sometimes, though, I get tired of chewing basically a whole bag of lettuce, so I’ve basically been living for smoothies! To make myself feel better, I’ve incorporated some fruit smoothies into my routine so that I’m not always staring at a glass of dark green sludge (no offence, green smoothies, I still love you). Not to worry, though, this smoothie is still just as healthy as any other, it just photographs so much better! 😉 I called this “Purple Power Potion” (insert eye-rolling emoji) because it really is quite a powerful beverage; it is quick and easy to make and provides an instant pick me up after the first couple of sips filled with nutritious goodness.
So you might be wondering, what exactly do I need to create this drink? Well, just a few common ingredients and we’ll be on our way!
These ingredients might seem a little odd when displayed together, but trust me when I say that their combined taste is phenomenal!
If you’ve been reading the bylaws for a while, you probably already know that blackberries are my favourite fruit. Any shade, any form, if it’s called a blackberry, I’ll eat it! It’s just something about that beautiful colour, the sweet and sour taste…oh my, they are just so good! I absolutely love them, so there is always a steady supply in my fridge as of late. In case you didn’t know, blackberries are packed with vitamin C and fiber, making them a healthy snack or salad-topper. Another one of my favourite “superfruits”, blueberries, are chock-full of skin pleasing antioxidants, anthocyanins (or in simple terms, the pigments that make blueberries blue) that improve brain function and can manage, if not, lower both cholesteral and blood pressure levels,. In other words, when you combine the two in a tasty smoothie, you basically step into a healthy, blissful berry wonderland. Yum!
The best part about this recipe (if you can even call it that)? Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, you can literally just toss everything into a blender and go! Today, I used the Ninja, which is truly a miracle worker, breaking every part of food down with ease, but I’ve also used a Vitamix to create this with the same results. You want to make sure you’re using quite a powerful blender, though, or you’ll be left with some chunky pieces. If you don’t have access to a high speed blender, don’t worry, just run the ingredients through for a bit longer to avoid bitty pieces!
After you’ve thrown everything in, just blend, or pulse if you’re using a Ninja or similar blender, for about 2-3 minutes. It may seem like a long time when written, but trust me, any amount of blending under 2 minutes isn’t going to be enough. You really want to make sure that the banana has been incorporated, to add some creaminess, and the dates have been evenly spread throughout, so that you don’t have random patches of sweetness. If you find that your blender is having difficulty moving things around, add some more water (or even better, coconut water [hello hydration!], fruit juice or milk!); if your blender seems to blend things together really quickly, your smoothie will likely be too thin in the end, so add some ice.
I’d like to take this time to point out a couple of alternatives or add-ins, that both add to the flavour and nutritional value of this pretty smoothie. If you don’t have any frozen blueberries on hand, that’s okay, just add your fresh berries plus a cup of ice to give your smoothie a smoother texture (ha!) and a refreshing, cool temperature. I’ve also been making this smoothie with some peanut or almond butter thrown in, about a tablespoon, just for some added protein and a nuttier flavour. However, seeing as I used the last dollop of peanut butter in my household yesterday (hehe, oops, sorry Mom & Dad!), I couldn’t add it in today! Try it, though, it tastes quite good (I know, you wouldn’t expect it to taste good with berries, but it does, I promise!). If you are afraid of avocados (*gasp* THE HORROR!), you can replace it in the recipe with a teaspoon of coconut oil, another healthy fat (but be warned: coconut oil is more fat than nutrients, unlike an avocado), or you can just omit the fat altogether. Finally, if you can’t track down dates, you can add in another natural sweetener like honey or 100% pure maple syrup. I personally like the texture that dates add to my smoothies, though, and the fact that their flavour isn’t overpowering, unlike honey can sometimes be, so that is why I went with dates today! 🙂
Alright, so now that the blender has done all of hard work, pour your wondrous smoothie into a glass (or two or three!), garnish with some blackberries if you want to be super fancy, and let your tastebuds dance! 😀
There you have it, friend, a purple smoothie that is so pretty, Prince would be proud! 😉 More importantly, this smoothie is as delicious as it is nutritious, and to me, that is the winning mark, after all, what in the world could be better?! Healthy, yummy, quick, easy; yup, that covers all of my buzzwords.
So, what do you think!? Are you willing to give this a try!? You totally should, and if you do, be sure to send a photo to me on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtags #DrinkItYourself, #PurplePowerPotion and/or #BeautyBylaws! I’d love to see your libation creations! 🙂
That’s all for today, folks, but be sure to check in on the bylaws tomorrow, I have a pretty exciting beauty review that will be up around noon! 🙂
