So, a while ago I promised that I was going to write a post about the hair products that I turn to the most, but it didn’t end up happening. That is, until now! I change my hair products a lot as I don’t feel like I have found holy grail products (in other words, can’t live without) in ALL areas of my hair care routine, however, these 5 items, I would be lost if they were ever discontinued or not available.
I will start in the order that they are used:

The awesome squeeze cap keeps product in but it’s easy to squeeze out just the amount you want/need. |
Oh my goodness. I am so beyond in love with this product, I couldn’t even tell you. I have really dry, damaged, almost brittle hair and I have never had a better deep conditioner in my life. I have tried a couple of other ones, I tried the Nexxus one and Joico K-Pak one, but WOW! This conditioner makes my hair possibly the softest it’s ever been. I had heard a lot about it but I hadn’t gone to the states in a while and it was only available over there. I thought about investing in the Redken Heavy Cream, but then I learnt of my uncle’s engagement and we started planning our trip. So, when my family and I arrived in Vancouver/Seattle in May, I made it my mission to find some of these and bring home multiples (I just finished my first bottle but I have 3 extra!), and boy, am I ever glad I did! Considering that I paid $3.99 USD for it (which was about $3.75 CAD at the time), I have never owned such an affordable yet stellar product like this.
How I use it: I use it in the shower, about once a week (sometimes if my hair feels REALLY bad, I’ll bump it up to two times a week). I use regular shampoo and conditioner and then coat my hair with a generous layer of this. I then put it up in a make-shift bun and continue with my regular shower things – wash face, exfoliate, wash body, etc.). By the time I am done all of that, it’s been about 3 minutes, and I swear when I start rinsing it out I can feel SUCH a difference. It’s amazing what a difference 3 minutes makes! 😉
Why I like it soooo much: It’s affordable, it makes my hair soft, touchable, less frizzy and it is super easy to detangle knots. Plus, it smells great (like coconuts! :D) and I like the packaging. Can’t get much better!

Oh, Nexxus! I’ve got to be honest, I don’t like a lot of your products, but you sure did hit the nail on the head here! You gave all of those girls who fret about dry and brittle hair a nice breath of fresh air. Fret not, girls. Mr. HL (Humectress Luxe) is here to save the day! I don’t really like wetting my hair often, as I find that it dries it out even more, but when I spray this in my hair, I can’t even tell the difference. So wonderful! ♥
How I use it: Alright, so I’m out of the shower now and I’ve towel dried my hair and applied my facial moisturizer (those are literally the first things I do when I step out of my shower). Next, I take my rat tail comb and part my hair how I would like it for the day. Then I proceed to spray about 8 – 10 pumps to my roots and tips of my hair and then comb through it with a wide tooth comb. Et voila! I’m on to the next step, which varies depending on how I am styling it for the day.
Why I like it sooo much: The bottom line is, I definitely see a difference when I do not have this in my hair. The spray makes it more moisturized and (lightly) tames frizz so my hair feels AND looks healthier, shinier and overall, better.
The next step is where it gets a bit more complicated, as I do different things to my hair everyday (or at least most days). Sometimes I leave it natural, sometimes I straighten it and sometimes I straighten it and then curl it (which sounds like a hassle, and to be honest, sometimes it is, but the end result is worth it). I decided to go into my simple natural style and straightening first…

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. If this was a competition, you would definitely win! I really like using this mousse in the summer months, just because my usual hair routine can feel a bit heavy when you reach 30+ degrees (celsius). One would think that just using a mousse in my natural hair would not work very well, as the first word I think of is frizz, but for some reason, it does! It probably has something to do with the fact that it has a leave in conditioner built into it, but often when these products say that they are a leave in conditioner, they only work for people with a particular hair type. However, it is pretty much the only thing that I use for everyday styling in the summer (except if I am going out at night).
How I use it: If I just showered and shampooed, I towel dry my hair and then pump a generous size amount of this into my hand, then rub it through my hair. This is literally the only product that I don’t comb my hair after applying to even it out, as I know the rule of thumb: barely any on my roots and apply more as I get lower throughout my hair. I then scrunch my hair a little and then style as desired. On the days that I have not washed my hair, I usually just apply a touch more to the ends of my hair, scrunch and go (to prevent excess frizz). I doubt that you are supposed to use mousse when you’re hair is dry, and I am aware that it works a lot better when I do use it wet, but it still works well when my hair is dry. If I really want my hair to look amazing, I lightly spritz the ends of my hair with my Nexxus spray and then add a touch of mousse, scrunch and go. Perfect! To tame the flyaways at the top of my head on dry days, I just use a bit of BioSilk (which I love but I would not die if they discontinued it or stopped selling in Canada. I would probably just find another hair serum.)
Why I like it sooo much: In my experience with using mousse before, it always turns my hair into, essentially, a dry, stiff and crispy piece of board. I’m not kidding, my hair would always unify into a single piece and look like I just gelled it into place. I did not like that look, nor did I like how it felt, and I ESPECIALLY did not like combing out my hair after the day was done. Therefore, I was a bit hesitant to try this, but felt hopeful and eventually bought it anyway. I am super glad that I did because it actually makes my hair feel and look nice. It gives me that super feminine beachy waves look in the summer and I like that I don’t have to pile 20 products in my hair to achieve it. It feels light (I actually can’t even feel that it) and looks lovely. Plus, the name is cute and catchy. All in all, it’s rockin’.

You know when people say that if you follow a certain number of steps but don’t do the last one that there was no point in even trying? That rings very true for this product. My mom and I would literally be lost without this product. I have been using it since I was about 11 and I will continue using it until the end of time. It can be used for many different things; it can be applied through your whole head to provide extra moisture and nutrients when your hair is wet or dry, it can be used to tame frizziness throughout the ends of your hair, or, the way that I use it most, which is applying it as a sort of finishing cream to whatever hairstyle I sport for the day. I only apply it, however, when my hair is natural because it is super moisturizing and would definitely ruin any straightness in my hair when straightened, and it can get quite heavy if too much is used and I am always slightly worried when I curl my hair about this fact (so, I haven’t actually tried applying it when I have curled my hair but I’m sure this would only end in disaster :p). I literally use it everyday and it was the first product I thought of when gathering products to photograph for this post.
There are other varieties of this cream that you can get. My mom uses the same cream but with the “Rose H20” specification and I believe that you can get one called “Coconut Souffle” as well. However, as most of you know, I have extremely sensitive skin and though I prefer the smell of “Coconut Souffle”, it results in anywhere that my hair touches (neck, upper chest, side of my face) breaking out into an unsightly rash. This is also true for “Rose H20”. It is a shame, but this is not to say that the “Butter Rich” one smells horrible, because it doesn’t. It actually reminds me of buttercream, and I love buttercream (great, now I am hungry -.-). Also, my hair, being consistently styled with heat and having permanent highlights in it, is much more damaged than my mom’s and I think that the “Butter Rich” one gives my hair the most tender love and care.
How I use it: Like aforementioned, I use this product in a variety of ways, however, what I use it for most is a finishing product. Say I am wearing my hair in a bun, I style it and there is almost always going to be residual flyaways and just annoying frizz at the top and back of my head. So, I bust out my Mizani, take a pinch of cream from the jar, rub it between my hands and then coat the top and back of my head with it. I then quickly run my brush over the areas that I put the Mizani on. What I am left with is shiny, healthy looking, well-nourished and frizz-diminished hair.
Why I like it soooo much: When I think about all of the products that I use in my hair, this one gets the most points and praise. I am a pretty fickle person and often change up the products that I use. So, for me to use this product in my hair almost every single day for 10+ years, it’s a bloody miracle. This speaks volumes about how the product performs and what it does for me. Need I say more?
Woohoo! So, now you know the things that float my boat on the hair front. I believe I mentioned this at the beginning of the post, but if ANY of these products were discontinued, I would, not joking, cry. After a day of sorrow (wow, I’m so dramatic but that’s actually probably what would happen), I’d go on a manhunt for the last of these products. I’ve already had one beloved product get discontinued and slip from my fingers (R.I.P Tresemme Shaping Milk), I’m not about to let it happen again!!
Hope you enjoyed this not-so-brief overlook and if you have any questions, feel free to ask away in the comment section down below. Thanks 🙂
Au Revoir!
Much love,
S♥
