Oh, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards, the winter formal of award show season. By that I mean, you’d obviously want to dress up if you were going to the SAGs, but it’s the more casual of the “Big 3” (Golden Globes, SAGs & Academy Awards). It’s not quite as formal and eventful as prom, it’s more like the good times and good laughs of a house party, with semi-casual evening wear thrown in for good measure.
So, did you catch the 21st Annual SAGs last night? I did and I have to say, it looked like a good night! It seemed that all of our celeb friends and crushes seemed to be having a blast, and I can’t really say I majorly disagree with any of the big winners. I do, however, disagree with the way that some of Hollywood’s leading ladies (and gents) were dressed! Oh my, did you SEE some of those looks!? Today, I’m going to walk you through some of my favourite looks, and some of the looks that if I see again, my eyeballs might actually pop out this time (and not in a good way, either).
The Worst Dressed
Now I’m not often fond of starting a blog post with negativty, but when it’s being held up against ending a post with negativity, it’s the better of the two options. There sure were some hum-dingers of outfits last night, but here are the looks that I basically wept over.
Keira Knightley

Photo from here.
I know this first choice is a controversial one, and I truly feel terrible about picking on a pregnant lady, but come on! Someone’s looking for their drapes!!! Lovely colour, lovely hair, wrong shape, wrong silhouette, wrong dress. Next!
Claire Danes

Photo from here.
Can someone please tell Claire Danes that unless you’re born in May, which she’s not, it’s not appropriate to wear emerald green stones…much less a dress paneled in them. Plus, she doesn’t seem to be very nice (she gave this death glare/onceover to Emma Stone and then gave very monotone, almost rude answers to Maria M. on the E! Red Carpet). Two thumbs down!
Jennifer Aniston

Photo from here.
J is the namesake of today’s post, saggy at the SAGs. Need I say more? Okay, I’m already not a fan of her, like, at all, but honestly!? She’s worn some truly stunning outfits this award season, and given that she won’t be at the Oscars this year, this is her last red carpet for a little while. Thus, wouldn’t you come out in a REMARKABLE outfit, stunning one and all and leaving a flawless impression!? No, instead, she wore this…which…oh jeez, I don’t even know what to say. It looks like a tapestry my mom used to have. And if you’re going to wear a dress like this, well, don’t.
Julianne Moore

Photo from here.
Okay, so, worst dressed might be a little harsh for this one, but I just…I don’t know, something was left to be desired. Especially given the roll Julianne is currently, and rightly, on, I expected more. This didn’t stun or wow like I expected it to, but I guess Julianne is saving that for the academy. Either way, I like the colour, I just don’t enjoy the whole look or find it particularly visually appealing.
Rashida Jones

Photo from here.
There are no words. As much as I want to applaud Rashida for being her awesome self, and sticking to her own sense of style, I can’t. What happened!? I don’t understand the blue, the weird print, the…any of it. I’m sorry, Rashida, but this is a no-go.
Maggie Gyllenhaal

Photo from here.
White is such a lovely colour on the red carpet, and Maggie did not do it justice, to say the very least. Personally, I felt like it washed her out a little, despite her strong lip and killer accessories, and that slit in the front was plain weird. Furthermore, what is it with the lack of bras on the carpet last night!? Bras are your friend on the red carpet, ladies, it’s your moment to shine, not your girls.
Rosamund Pike

Photo from here.
Okay, who let the ostrich loose on the carpet!? Oh wait, that’s Rosamund Pike!? WHOA, didn’t even notice! As much as I love me some RP, especially after seeing Gone Girl over the weekend (and I’m still emotionally reeling from it, girl, it was a roller coaster!), I was hedging my bets on her to wow us! She’s the Lupita Nyong’o of 2015, if you will; the girl to watch, the newcomer, the stylish stunner. So WHAT HAPPENED!? A lot of people seemed to love the “cascading wall of black roses” but I just found the whole look very confusing & underwhelming. Is she at a fancy gala? An extravagant funeral? Because I would have never guessed that she was actually nominated with that dress. :S :/ (ps – that’s basically the face I was making hours after watching Gone Girl, ha!)
Viola Davis

Photo from here.
Where do I begin? Let me start off by saying that I really admire and respect Viola. She’s an incredible actress, and though I don’t actually watch How To Get Away with Murder, I hear truly fantastic things about it. Now, for the not-so-fun part. I don’t like the halter neckline on this otherwise beautiful dress. I think if it had a sweetheart neckline, or something similar, it would look wonderful, but I think a halter on such a muscular woman (which, hey, girl…YOU GO GLEN COCO!) is a little off-putting. And then there’s her hair. I am all for rocking the natural hair…but I don’t think it went well with the entire look, and especially not with those earrings. Oh, and does anyone else see that white powdery stuff across Viola’s skin? Is that her moisturizer? I don’t know…but what I do know is, it doesn’t look good.
Lorelei Linklater

Photo from here.
Unfortunately, this is the worst of the worst and definitely my overall worst dressed look from last night. To sum it up, Lorelei is a beautiful young lady (she’s 20!!!), with a gorgeous name and apparently some pretty freakin’ raw talent, yet she’s wearing a super frumpy, non-fitted and altogether unflattering gown that covers every aspect of her. I don’t like the sleeves, the shape of the dress, the back of the dress, pretty much ANY PART of the dress! It’s just…not my cup of tea, and while I admire Lorelei for staying true to herself (because at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters), I think she could have worn a potato sack and have it be more appealing. Maybe next time, Lorelei!? #ihope
The Best Dressed
So, now that I’ve compltely bashed all of the people who, in my opinion, needed a serious outfit change, let’s get to the bold and the beautiful looks of the evening. 🙂
Eddie Redmayne

Photo from here.
Ladies, is there anything better than a dashing young man in a double-breasted suit!? Oh my, Eddie Redmayne had my heart all aflutter last night. Seriously, one glance at his gorgeous face, his perfect suit and hearing one word in that oh-so-sexy accent had me singing “give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that Red-mayne bar!!!” 😉 MMHHHMMMMM.
Eric Dane

Photo from here.
Two words, silver fox. Barely recognizable, Eric Dane looked fantastic last night! When he came out to present, all I could think was “That bowtie, though!” He knows how to look good, and he did a fabulous job last night without going over the top.
Lupita Nyong’o

Photo from here.
The golden girl does it again! Just one look at that flawless hair and that bee-you-tiful gown makes me wonder about how unfair it is that I’ll never be Lupita. The picture of grace, her lovely dress is just forward-thinking enough while still maintaining an air of femininity and flair. Well done, Lupita, well done!
Felicity Jones

Photo from here.
Every now and then, a complete shock or surprise will emerge on the carpet, and last night, this was the one. Felicity Jones looked breathtaking in this beautiful floor length gown, and the hair, makeup and accessories perfectly complimented the look. I thought that she looked like a vision and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us in the future, because this is a true statement maker and game changer. Beautiful!
Reese Witherspoon

Photo from here.
Reese Witherspoon is one of, if not my all-time favourite actress, and when she walked down the carpet looking like a dream, I couldn’t help but beam with joy. White just seems to suit her, because whenever she’s worn it, she looks flawless. When you combine the lovely, slightly unexpected dress with that awesome “Oh, I woke up like this” hair and the perfect makeup, you get a winning look. She looked amazing from head to toe. Oh, how I envy her/want to be best friends with her. Gorgeous!
Emma Stone

Photo from here.
CAN THIS WOMAN DO ANY WRONG!? Seriously, just once, it’d be nice if she could show up on the red carpet looking hideous, just to prove that she is HUMAN! Emma Stone always pushes the boundaries on the red carpet and it always pays off. She looks simply magnificent in an on-trend Dior gown that fits her like a glove and is just edgy enough to make me rethink my whole wardrobe, but not so edgy that she looks out of place. Moreover, her makeup and hair!? PERFECTION. Her accessories? FLAWLESS. Seriously, whoever dressed her hit it out of the park, and she is by far my ultimate best dressed of the night. This goes to show you, kiddies, sometime when you take a risk, it’s worth it. #norisknoreward Good for you, Emma!
Phew. So, that’s it folks! Those are my thoughts on some of the looks that made me rejoice…and some of the ones that..well, didn’t. What do you think of my picks? Do you agree? Who would you choose for best and worst dressed? You know what to do!
Thank you for reading, friend! I’ll be back soon with another post, but until then…
Much love,
S♥
